Jack is having a bad day. First he has to eat tree bark porridge for breakfast. Then his mother tells him he has to sell the family cow. He manages to anger everyone in the market, then he makes a bad trade for the cow and ends up with a handful of worthless beans. His mother is angry with him and he has to go to bed without supper. When he gets up the next morning and wonders if it's going to be another bad day, something magical happens. Jack discovers that sometimes there's no place to go but up.
